For those of you who like to be selective about your statistics this is a good one. It is the basis behind the recent claims that the Food Harvest 2020 strategy is a roaring success. The comment I added to this elsewhere is below. Facile is a word that comes to mind. It is, however, nice to know that the agri-food sector is positive about 2015; it kind of reflects the growing gulf between the farming sector and the food sector in Ireland. One of them being seen as a cheap raw material supplier to the other. Global food prices go up and export values go up. There is a lot of back-patting going on over this one. Why not look at the agri-food trade balance? Why not, well maybe it is because it is going nowhere. If one factors in all the imports of raw materials by the agri-food industry and the capital equipment exports it may well be negative over the last five years. I wonder who will claim the credit for that one?
