For those of you who remember Mark Whiting, he would have been 47 today. I met him in 1983 in basic training and we remained firm friends ever since. He was an RCT Radio Operator who served in 4 from 1987 until 1992, did a spell as Comd Meds driver at HQ 4 Armd Div and drove Maj Ewan Carmichael in Gulf 1. After moving over to the RLC when they formed, he transferred to the Military Provost Staff Corps where he finished his time before joining HM Prison Service. He worked at Brixton on the violent offenders wing. For some reason none of us who knew him can fathom, he hung himself on Maundy Thursday, 2012. I attended his funeral and have never seen such a packed chapel. It is testament to his popularity that the wing of the Prison almost had to be closed for the day so those who wanted to attend could do so. The prisoners on the wing pledged to behave themselves for the day out of respect to him and to allow maximum attendance by the staff as he was well so liked by those on both sides of the bars. 24658135 SSgt Whiting M, friend and comrade, Rest In Peace. My thoughts are with your family today and every day.
