For those of you wondering about the NSA data collection on telephone records, here is some info you can look into. Its called SMDR, its commonplace and is on every PBX office telephone system on earth. Its only collected when you make a call; but its also activated on small systems as a standard option and anyone can utilize it. Big systems like the municipal telephone systems known as ESS electronic Switching Systems, Or Nortel, Avaya, Avaya G3R,Avaya Aura and may other brands that are employed by our local and long distance telephone companys know as (LEC), the stuff thats inside the local telephone building or hotel, offce for that matter.. SMDR is an abbreviation for station message-detail recording. Regardless of their size, most telephone systems output Call Detail Records (CDR). Generally, these are created at the end of a call. But on some phone systems, the data is available during the call. This data is output from the phone system by a serial link known as the Station Message Detail Recording port (SMDR). Some of the details included in call records are: Time, Date, Call Duration, Number dialed, Caller ID information, Extension, Line/trunk location, Cost, Call completion status.
