For those that dont know... The potlatch was a completely integral part of how numerous First Nations organized their social structure and culture. Put simply, the methodology behind it was that one displayed wealth by giving as much as they could away. This ran counter intuitively to the forced adoption of capitalism by missionaries and the federal government, and as a result was declared illegal. To truly understand what this would have done to these nations, you have to do some learning. Boring and pointless right? Bullshit. People ask me sometimes, why cant Indians get it together? I answer why would you expect that a culture that has been so oppressed for so long, in so many blatant and horrific ways, suddenly become healthy by your definitions?...For the record, we are starting to get it together.
