For those who follow my writing you will have seen referenced Lou Gehrigs speech more than a few times. Take the time to watch it, it is truly an example of both the best we have in sports (getting ready for Taney tonight) grace, gratitude, humility, simple but stunning oration & is what led me to first research ALS years ago. I have been nominated for the #AlsIceBucketChallenge which I will do today & Im sure no one will be surprised that I plan to do it differently! While this sometimes loner, gets a person to come over so I can tape it I wanted to share the following. Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It affects nerve cells in the brain & the spinal cord. As the disease progresses the motor neurons die, without them the brain cant start or control muscle movement. This can lead to total paralysis. It is a devastating & cruel disease that affects thousands & that we know not much about. Research is needed & I am happy that a smaller cause has gotten the attention it deserves. Though it seems to strike people of all backgrounds, I have watched with particular interest the research into understanding why our men & women in uniform who served in the Gulf in the 90s are getting it at much higher rates. As an environmentalist, someone who has lived through tons of draughts in Cali, seen the impact of water use on sink holes in Florida & acutely aware of the millions who die yearly for lack of water I wont be using a bucket full of ice water sorry. But between now & lunch when my buddy comes over I will think of something fun! https://youtube/watch?v=_SKyfGK9brs
