For those who grew up in Kisumu in the 1980s, do you remember The man called Ago and the song we sang as estate and school children thus: Long time ago, there was a man called Ago, who used to sell gobide, gobide ma okwany kataka, maembe ma okwany e chiro... I have today remembered and sang the song to my children, narrating to them the story of Ago and his gobide and how he rode his old bike across the town, from neighborhood to neighborhood, from one school to another, selling the famous gobit. Where did Ago disappear to. Is he alive? I would love to visit Ago, sing the song once again, and chew some gobit. And come to think of it, what was gobit made of?
