For those who missed the Rally at the capital and some of the speeches, here is mine We are here to address our lawmakers on a state and city level and to directly address Officer Olsen and chief Burbank and the SLCPD Here is what we get: • We get that police put their lives on the line daily- and we, AS LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, we thank you for your service! • We get that police become hardened by what they see and know about crime • We get that not all cops are bad cops, and that most understand the sophistication of service • We get that cops who see bad things don’t want their families to know or experience what they witnessed. • We get PTSD and the lack of resources to deal with it. • We get it. • We get the visceral reaction of the police when one of their own was shot recently. We as a community mourned with you and we are truly sorry for your loss. That officer was family to you! What an awful scene that must have been! We understand your anger, your angst and your need to see justice served. • WE GET IT- Please applaud our police force for their daily sacrifices • So why- and this is directly aimed at you, Officer Olsen and Chief Burbank, are you so surprised at the visceral reaction of Sean when he found his dogs brains scattered and blood all over the backyard? Why are you surprised at the anger of the public with such a violation of trust? Is it because , to you, officer Olsen, Geist was “ just a dog”! A dog in your way? We don’t believe that Geist was “ upon you” as you claim. We believe you shot Geist because you could, and you knew the standard lie, “ I felt threatened” would ensure you got away with it, as many police across the country have. The tweet of your own department said it all “During the search for a child, unfortunately a dog was shot.” • You did not anticipate the outcry, did you OFFICER OLSEN AND CHIEF BURBANK? • We are here today to tell you OUR VISCERAL REACTION TO SUCH VIOLENCE IS AS REAL AS YOURS THE DAY YOUR FELLOW OFFICER WAS SHOT. WHILE YOU AS POLICE MAY NEVER REALLY GET OVER THE VIOLENCE IN YOUR EVERY DAY DUTIES, SEAN AND THE PUBLIC’S VISCERAL REACTION WAS NOT OUT OF PROPORTION. SEAN IS NOT A HARDENED COP USED TO SEEING SUCH BRUTALITY AND GEIST WAS NOT THE SHOOTER. GEIST WAS FAMILY. OUR DOGS ARE FAMILY AND THEY ARE NOT YOUR TARGET PRACTICE! • We are here today to tell you we ACROSS AMERICA ARE DONE WITH IMPUNITY FOR ‘ ABOVE THE LAW BEHAVIOUR! WE ARE NOT A POLICE STATE. THIS IS AMERICA! OUR POLICE SHOULD BE THE FINIEST OF THE FINE. TO THOSE OF YOU ON THE FORCE WHO BELIEVE THIS IS A SHAMEFUL ATROCITY- TAKE BACK YOUR FORCE! YOU DESERVE BETTER LEADERSHIP. • LASTLY, CHIEF BURBANK…WE ARE NOT RIDICULOUS! WE ARE ANGRY AND WE WANT CHANGE AND JUSTICE, WHERE JUSTICE IS DUE. • THANK YOU
