For those who think academically, I found this comment on another page rather helpful: ...In Ron Pauls backing of Cuccinelli, I feel that over the past 10 years, Ron has been a more valuable asset to the Republican Party, as has it been to him. Obviously he garnered support in both libertarian and republican camps when he made is run at the bid in 2012, and would certainly have been front runner at that point for most. But for me in that election Ron did not run as a libertarian, he was bidding for republican interests. I think when you play ball with the GOP at that level, your monies become questionable if theyve allowed you to reach that point. Ron is certainly a fan of liberty, but given his republican ticket, I stuck with the alternative in Gary Johnson. Johnson was less policy influenced by large party politics, and had a firm stand on campaign finance reform and term limits. You also have to consider that Paul ran as a republican congressman for his entire career, with a fairly consistent voting record as such. With his current situation, his son Rand has a shot at the republican president, and I would consider that his sons chance at the highest office is certainly in his interests. Rand is far more establishment than his father, and consistently conservative socially, which puts him outside of my considerations as libertarian, particularly gaining the bid of highly funded parties with corporate donors. By extension, Rand had it in his interests to support Cuccinelli based on political importance of having a republican state governor, particularly a tea party ringer. Sarviss grass roots I feel make him more trustworthy to me, especially considering the degrees removed he was from the money he was given by the libertarian PAC. That was a lump donation that the LPVA took to run the entire libertarian platform of Virginia. Sarvis received an overwhelming amount of Virginia grass root donations, very little in any corporate donations, much less very large quantities of such. Equally, he put $30,000 of his own money in addition to the $11,000 he received from the Libertarian PAC(where the leimandt(sp?) donation comes into play). He was given that money by the LPVA when they gave him the bid. He invested a great deal getting himself off the ground. He then spent the summer driving around the state in his van campaigning. Following it all from the beginning, I can say I trust Sarvis more. Ive watched him since June right before he got Ballot access. I feel that if youre willing to hedge up $30k of your own change to get off the ground, youve got a pretty honest bid....
