For todays #MeetMolotovMonday, Company Member Adam R. Adkins tells us all about one of his favorite horror films: Im a big movie fan. For about ten years, I would make a yearly list of 100 movies to see. Ive abandoned the list recently due to not having the time, but by doing it I got to see a lot of great films that I wouldnt have gotten to see otherwise. One of those films was Les Diaboliques, a 1955 French Horror/Suspense film. Directed by the brilliant Henri-Georges Clouzot, who also directed The Wages of Fear and Le Corbeau: The Raven, it tells the story of a cruel headmaster of a boys school who is killed by his wife and his mistress. However, as the film progresses, the body disappears and the two women are haunted by strange events that makes them question their sanity. It was originally written as a novel by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac with the intention of Alfred Hitchcock buying the movie rights, but Clouzot swept in before he could. It has a lot of the same elements that a Hitchcock film does, building the suspenseful and unsettling atmosphere rather than relying on cheap jump scares. I first watched this one night as I was going to bed, expecting a simple foreign film to lull me to sleep. But two hours later, I was crawling up the walls saying to myself The dead stay dead! The dead stay dead! To me, tightly-wound suspense is always scarier than a monster jumping out and saying Boo. Clouzot builds this perfectly, leading to an ending that most people arent going to see coming. At least I didnt. When you get a chance, take in this oft-forgotten masterpiece. Youll be glad that you did. What do you think of Adams selection? Let us know in the comments!
