For years now, Ive been disturbed by a specific kind of pseudo-intellectualism that the internet seems to breed that I think is dangerous to civil dialogue and intellectual life. Because (with Google and Wikipedia) we have instant access to a lot of information, it makes us feel smarter and better informed than we really are. At the same time, the arguments, reasoning, etc are becoming more hackneyed and uniform, as we repeat things that we read somewhere that sounded smart, feel smug about ourselves for saying it, while really just relatively thoughtlessly conforming to a given internet image that we want to be part of. I feel like theres less deep engagement of information, and more simple skipping along the surface, while at the same time being inflated with pride. Does anyone else know what I mean?
