Forecast for today, Monday 11 August: Showers in western and northwestern counties will spread to all areas this morning. Occasional heavy showers will occur up to late evening, with thunderstorms likely to break out locally. Sunny intervals also but cooler than normal; highest temperatures 15 to 18°C. Winds moderate to fresh, southwest to west with strong gusts near showers. Tonight: Early tonight, showers will retreat to western counties and clear spells will develop further east. However, along the Atlantic seaboard showers will remain heavy and even thundery at times, and will tend to merge into longer spells of rain on Connacht and west Munster coasts later. Winds moderate, occasionally fresh; lowest temperatures 8 to 11°C. Tomorrow: Showers or longer outbreaks of rain in the west and southwest will spread steadily eastwards during Tuesday, with heavy, thundery downpours occurring in places. In the evening, shower activity will decrease and cloud will begin to break. Moderate to fresh, southwest winds will gradually veer west to northwest as the day goes on and it will be rather cool; highest temperatures 15 to 17°C. Tomorrow night: Tuesday night will see showers retreating to northern and western counties, while the rest of the country becomes mainly dry with clear spells. Moderate, to fresh, northwesterly breezes will persist and it will be rather cool. Wednesday: Showers will become more widespread during Wednesday but all areas will have sunny intervals throughout the day, and the showers will soon become isolated during the evening. Northwesterly winds will tend to moderate as the day goes on and it will feel milder further south and east. Thursday: Another day of sunny intervals and scattered showers, although only a few showers are likely to be heavy. Moderate, northwesterly breezes will prevail and all except exposed coasts will be mild. Showers will tend to die out on Thursday night and skies will mostly clear. Friday: Likely to be mainly dry day across the country with a mixture of cloud and sunny intervals. Moderate, northwesterly breezes will persist but most areas will be mild again. Weekend outlook: The early part of next weekend may be fairly breezy, with spells of rain or drizzle in many areas but these should clear by Sunday, leaving it mainly dry with sunny spells and near normal temperatures.
