Foreign Affairs Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says trophy hunting is essential in the promotion of market based- tourism, conservation and community development. Nandi-Ndaitwah notes that as a country with over 25-thousand rural people living in conservancies with wildlife, trophy hunting has yielded positive results for the communities. She says it has enabled the beneficiaries to earn an income and cautions against its being seen as a brutal practice against wild animals. The Foreign Affairs Minister made the remarks at the just-ended Adventure Travel World Summit at Swakopmund. Nandi-Ndaitwah was the Minister of Environment and Tourism when Namibia successfully bid for bringing the Adventure Travel World Summit to Africa for the first time. Namibias protected areas and conservancies are the countrys most valuable attractions, with 20 government parks and reserves covering approximately 16-comma-seven percent of its total land area. Records of the Environment and Tourism Ministry indicate that trophy hunting has helped battle poaching, especially in areas where community game guards patrol. Likewise, the wildlife populations have recovered and provided the basis for 34 joint venture tourism lodges and 44 hunting concessions since 1998.
