Forensic Investigator I Onondaga County Medical Examiner, Syracuse, NY Salary: $47,843 - $52,937 / yr Final Filing Date: February 28, 2015 Duties: scene investigation with examination of the body at the location of death, inspection of the scene environment, photo-documentation of the scene findings, meeting with families and/or witnesses, collecting physical evidence for possible further testing. Investigators must work collaboratively with, but independent of, law enforcement authorities, emergency medical responders, and physicians both at the scene and through ongoing investigative communications relative to identification of decedents, family contacts, obtaining medical and social history, and funeral home disposition. Information is summarized in a medicolegal death investigation report. Requirements: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree related to a science (biological or physical science or anthropology) or a health-related curriculum (such as nursing) or criminal justice AND successful completion of an internship with a minimum of 150 hours in a Medical Examiner’s office; or Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree related to a science (biological or physical science or anthropology) or a health-related curriculum (such as nursing) or criminal justice AND two(2) years of work experience as a medicolegal death investigator; or American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators board certification. When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid Non-CDL or CDL license with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated. Applicants will be required to undergo a State and national criminal history background investigation, which will include a fingerprint check to determine suitability for appointment.
