Forgive and FORGET. So they say after an offence: Forgive and forget! Forget (verb) is defined as: to lose rememberance of, to unintentionally not do, neglect, to cease remembering, amnesic etc. This wisdom admonishes us to be all of these. I hate that saying! I grew up hearing this saying and i assumed it should be in the Bible, but its not! I wonder, if i have to forget an offence, crime or wrong done to me, how would i remember what i forgave in the first place? Or is it not worth remembering? Mans worst evil, i muse, is that he FORGETS and FORGETS and FORGETS!!! Then i prayed: Lord, may i forgive but never FORGET! Wars never end because we forget. Diseases and infections are pandemic because we forget. Vices seem eternal because we forget. Hatred, Acrimony and Enmity never cease because we cease remembering. History repeats its tracks simply because we are amnesic! 60-80million humans, 2.5% of the world population, died during the second world war. We forgot the First world war! Coming home, Biafra War claimed 55,000 military casualties, 1-3million civilian casualties! These were not Ants, they were Humans! Living, breathing, now dead Humans!! Because we forgot. I imagine that the human RACE is imbued with the capacity to retain, palpably so, old pains and wounds, to know and experience the ordeals and travails of the past and those swept by it. But do we? Its all too FORGOTTEN. We forgave and sadly FORGOT. My target today is my generation which like generations in eons past is forgetting; and since history is only as predictable as our memory makes it, we face another mindless holocaust. How soon we forget. No player in any historic holocaust would wish same for his legacy, but exactly that is what happens when memories are not immortalized! Apostles of sectional hate and divisive missives on Facebook and other virtual platforms, no matter how well articulated and rationalized, are deficient in the School of Memory. They are usually good Forget-ters! Savvy but Forgetful in everything unforgettable. Amnesia is a disease usually associated with Ageing but Sages are those who though not advanced in years are endowed with the virtue of remembering. Remembering the bony skeletons of starved children, stench and sights of decomposed kinsmen, testimonies and shame of defiled women, the horror of dusk, the panic of dawn, the appetite for ones waste and urine, the wish for death to strike, seeking refuge from ones own enemy, the death of hope, mars on earth! All because remembering ceased. Yawning for the aforementioned is often today perceived as Courage. They argue, if these will give us what we want, then why not? This again drives the point home. They FORGOT that these never gives ANYONE what he or she wants. They only give what they give! As we continue to preach hate and fan the embers of division, let us remember, if we can, that a man who forgot why he ought not start a fight is bound to soon forget why he started it! Forgive, but i forbid us to FORGET!!! Selah
