Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13 So, what if you got it? You know, REVENGE. What if you got justice for the pain that someone else caused you? What if that boss that gave someone else your promotion lost his summer home? What if that former friend who lied about you was publicly humiliated for something they had done? What if your ex-husbands girlfriend left him for a younger guy? What if your offender paid in full for what they had done? Revenge! What if you got it? What would you have? A temporary feeling of justice? A momentary thrill of victory? A fleeting sense that all has been made right with the world? The irony of revenge is that it never conquers the anger. Even if your offender suffers, it will never erase the pain they caused you. Revenge never rids your heart of bitterness, it feeds it. It just drudges back up all the junk that originally caused the need for it. The only way to truly win over an offense is to forgive it. Thats right, let it go. The apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians, forgive as the Lord forgave you. Sounds nice and pretty and Christian-like, but come on, am I really supposed to just let my offender go free? The Bible may tell me to forgive as the Lord forgave, but Im not God and it aint that easy. What makes you think that it was easy for the Lord to forgive? I dont recall Him just shrugging His shoulders and saying, OK, I wont hold it against them. No - seems to me that I remember Him being beaten within a breath of His life and then being nailed to a criminals cross so that all that I had done against Him could be erased. Jesus never sought revenge for the things that hurt His heart and neither should we. But I just cant let it go, you say, Its impossible!. I understand, but the good news is nothing is impossible with God. Let Him help you to forgive. He will. Rather than thinking of the offense done to you, consider the offenses that the Lord has forgiven you of doing. Thank Him for His grace and then ask Him to help you extend the same. No - revenge is not the answer. It never works. Forgiveness is the only place you will win. Darren Thomas
