Forgive me for doing something most who saw the game wont believe... giving a shoutout to my JV warriors, who came out on the short end of a 23-17 verdict tonight against visiting Conneaut. The score certainly doesnt indicate it, but my girls played very, very hard and did well -- with one obvious exception. Tonight, we were the team that could not shoot straight. Literally. For we missed our first, 20, count em, TWENTY shots of the game and, you had to see it to believe it -- they were of all varieties, the vast majority being inside of 10 feet. It was if there was an invisible rim on our bucket. (HATE when that happens!) That put us behind the 8-ball for pretty much the entire contest. In fact, we trailed, 11-0, before a Gabby Wagner bucket near the end of the first half got us on the board and we trailed, 11-2, at the intermission. Two more baskets by Gabby in the third quarter we all we could muster and we entered the fourth quarter trailing, 20-6. Faced with the choice of running up the white flag or digging in their heels, drawing a line in the sand and fighting, my girls chose the latter. We went on the attack defensively and, lo and behold, we came to life. We got to within 4 at 20-17, with 47 seconds to play but could not complete the comeback. Points wise, Gabby Wagner led us with 7 points, while fellow frosh and point guard Nicole Hamski had 6, all during our furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt. Fellow fab frosh Mighty Mya Perry and Paige Hayford each contributed 2 points, while frosh Gabi Pridemore, Taylor Heathfield, Geena Badalamenti and Abby Caskey, sophomore Emily Sukalac and junior Whilla Leslie also made contributions. Any coach worth his salt will tell you shooting is an aspect of the game that is built in the summer months. There is simply not enough time during the season to devote as much attention as necessary on a singular aspect of the game. And every one of my girls has vowed -- several times -- to be in the gym with me come June and July, working on their shots, mostly, along with other aspects of their game. For those who saw the game tonight and plan on being at our next game -- Tuesday at Riverside -- the style of play you saw out of us in the fourth quarter will be what we employ against the Beavers. We are going on the attack!
