Forgot to post on Sunday... This is the first Lied I learned when I was about 14 years old. The translation on the Rec Music is not completely accurate. There is nothing in the Klaus Groths poem that indicates that the cool eyes are a bad thing and detached as RecMusic says. I interpret this poem to mean that the cool eyes are a positive thing for the narrator (or at least he or she wants to see them as a positive thing as indicated in the first stanza) as I think Brahms did as well due to his beautiful and calm setting of the poem. So here is my try at the translation: Your blue eyes hold so still I look to the ground You ask me what I want to see I see my health (or well- being) It burned me, a glowing pair Still hurts the after-feeling Yours are like a sea so clear And like a sea so cool ______ Dein blaues Auge hält so still, Ich blicke bis zum Grund. Du fragst mich, was ich sehen will? Ich sehe mich gesund. Es brannte mich ein glühend Paar, Noch schmerzt das Nachgefühl; Das deine ist wie See so klar Und wie ein See so kühl. https://youtube/watch?v=8IgGwPJMhU4
