Forgotten Cemetery in Wetaug Illinois that I have never seen anyone enter. My grandmother says that when she was a little girl the loved ones of the people buried here would visit them but thats been decades ago. John Sowers a Revolutionary war soldier is buried here, from what I have found online he was from North Carolina. In the 1890s the pope sent Father Oswald Moosemueller here from the Bavarian Alps in Germany to start up a Catholic Monastery but he died of Malaria 8 or so years later. He is said to be buried here in Wetaug but Ive yet to locate his grave, not even in the Catholic cemetery a few hundred yards away. When he arrived here there were still Indians living here and if im not mistaken Chief Wetaug was still alive. From what Ive learned from reading about Father Oswald Moosemueller the catholic monks he left behind migrated up into Canada after his death. The Monastery steps and chimney can be found in my cousins field as well as the marsh that caused the Fathers death from malaria.
