Formed in late 1962, the Motor Town Revue began a national tour, which concluded with the performance on this record, at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater. The performers are, in order, The Contours, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye (doing both a cover and a song of his own), The Marvelettes, “Little” Stevie Wonder (only 12 years old at the time), Mary Wells (one cover, one of her own), and The Miracles (who were lucky enough to do two of their own songs). With a very receptive audience, the musicians quickly moving from one group to the next, and sly introductions from the MC, it’s a vibrant record of the performance that night. Each of the groups tries their best to out-shine the rest, with poppy soul and R&B making up the bulk of the music, and the result is a strong variety of personalities and styles. Something special for fans of the Motown sound of the ’60s.
