Former Governor Indicted Today Just picked up the headline from the Richmond Times Dispatch. It’s a fourteen-count indictment against the Governor and his wife. I’m reading it right now. A few preliminary observations: 1. Innocent until proven guilty. 2. Getting a conviction is a lot harder than getting an indictment. 3. There is significant evidence here of public corruption. That is why the grand jury approved the indictment. That alone is an embarrassment to all of us. 4. The General Assembly did absolutely nothing to investigate this situation. Instead, it was the Governor’s chef who acted as the whistleblower. Shameful. 5. Our current ethics laws are a joke. If we want people to take us seriously, we better put some teeth in them — and get it done this session. It’s been six months since I publicly called on the Governor to itemize his gifts from Johnnie Williams and return them — or step down. At that time, I was criticized for “grandstanding.” In retrospect, I stand by every word I said. As for our former Governor, I wish him all the best in the toughest time of his life. Now it’s up to a jury to make a determination on his future. The General Assembly didn’t have the guts to do it.
