Former Nakuru Mayor Seeks Sh4.5m For Torture Under Moi By Charles Ronald Thursday 19 June 2014 Former Nakuru mayor Herman Marine Nderi has moved to the High Court seeking orders to compel the Interior Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo to pay him Sh 4.5 million for unlawful detention. Nderi told Justice Weldon Korir on Wednesday that, last year, the court awarded him Sh 4.5 million as compensation for illegal detention. The court heard that Nderi was tortured by state officers at the infamous Nyayo House torture chambers on allegations of planning to overthrow former President Moi from office. Nderi was arrested and locked up in a dark cell for days and was kept without food, a sleeping mat, blanket or drinking water. The retired police officer claimed that he was beaten using bare hands, pieces of wood and electrocuted using exposed electric wires attached to his fingers as well as his private parts. During the hearing, Nderi said that he served the Attorney General’s office to facilitate the compensation but no payment has been made so far. Nderi, through his lawyer, also wants the court to sentence Iringo to six months in jail. Justice Korir, however, dismissed Nderi’s plea saying that such an order can only be made once there is evidence of disobedience of a court order. Hivisasa
