Former Queensland MP Kate Jones will nominate for preselection in Premier Campbell Newmans Brisbane seat of Ashgrove ahead of the next state election. Ms Jones held the seat for the ALP from 2006 to 2012, when she lost it to Mr Newman. Mr Newman holds Ashgrove with a 5.7 per cent margin, but recent polls indicated a significant swing against the Premier. There had been ongoing speculation that Ms Jones would return to politics and contest the seat. Earlier this month, the ALPs Queensland branch registered the domain name katejones.au. Ms Jones said the Premier had let the people of Ashgrove down and she was determined to reclaim the seat. She would not discuss recent polling or the result of the Stafford by-election in which the Liberal National Party (LNP) lost the seat with an 18.7 per cent swing against it. Ms Jones said deciding to stand for preselection was a battle between her head and her heart. But she said ultimately she had to do what she felt was the right thing for the people of Ashgrove. I know exactly how tough this campaign will be, she said. If I am preselected, I will be up against Campbell Newman and the entire LNP hierarchy.
