‘Forming Leaders the Ateneo Way’ Lesson plans, whiteboards, markers, erasers and work activities. It’s another Wednesday afternoon, and the Hausmann class is preparing themselves for the tutorial sessions that are about to take place as we ride our way to Bayabas Elementary School. Tulong Dunong, as we all know, is a program wherein all fourth year students devote one day of their whole afternoon tutoring grade six students about lessons which will be very much helpful for their preparation of taking the NAT examination. Tulong Dunong carries out the mission of the church through doing the basics of social responsibility. But that’s not all to it, those spared afternoons that tutors and tutees take hand in hand with each other increases the camaraderie, enlightens both sides, changes a lot of perspectives and most importantly, moral values become the main center of each session. Leaders they say are made and not born. The school with its Jesuit values, there is no wonder that the whole organization including, is carrying out the mission of the church though this sincere act of helping our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Tulong Dunong helps inculcate unto them our core values, the 5 C’s. We teach them how Ignatian spirituality can be present in everybody’s lives. Letting them learn the meaning of Magis and Cura Personalis. That, all men do what is according to His greater glory because it is just. Given this specific opportunity, all have the chance to teach basic ideals of Jesuit values and education. There is an imparting of knowledge, which we all know is valuable to most. Especially when the tutee’s first priority, aside from mainly helping their families, is getting a good education, and then, if their hard works are rewarded, they can finally get to a college. Now, that will be enough if it is taken care of properly, a good future is not far ahead. Through this, sparking change is inevitable, hopefully, even inspiration for hopefully all of our tutees to go farther, to reach higher and most especially, work harder. In turn, we learn from them as we also teach. Though it may not touch the areas of academics, it touches the parts of the heart. Where we, in turn, are also inspired to help and be helped, to teach and to be taught, learn, in order to reflect with all the things that we are fortunately blessed with. The mission is also carried out through various works of concern. Dedicating our time seems valuable even, as it is one of the most special gifts that cannot be given back. It does not have a receipt, not even a proof of purchase—just the memories that we all keep, including the memories of our tutees. Not only that, the formation that we fourth year students go through with this, is simply exemplary, we are taught indirectly, the terms of gratitude, contentedness, and being simply happy with the lives we have. It is a sort of blessing in disguise.
