Forough Farrokhzad (1935 – 1967): Excitement Do you remember when you asked me, with a smile– what I have brought back from such a long exile? Look at my face to quickly get your blunt reply– It’s this gleaming tear in my eager eye! -.-.-.- O My Life! What did I return from this voyage’s fret? Oh, of that impossible love, a heart burnt in regret, A gaze lost behind the shades of a dream, so far-away, A weary body that is, with the desire’s flames, in sway! -.-.-.- O My Life! What did I return from this travel’s ride? A pair of eyes, moist with torment, from the stir inside, A breath of hope and of desire, sleeping on the heat of my lips, A burning kiss, warmer than the sun’s kiss, in the southern trips! -.-.-.- Oh, many times, looking for a present apt for your star– did I aimlessly stray in the passway and in the bazaar! Then, I decided, after all- of my wandering and drift– a body burnt in a secret love will be your only gift! -.-.-.- But alas! Looking into the eyes of the mirror, I saw– away from you, my beauty’s marked with fault and flaw! To the warmth of the sun, I prayed and prayed– with its golden glow, to come in my aid! -.-.-.- And now, it is me, it is me, a Raving Fire! Oh You! The only hope of a soul spent in desire! Open, wide-open your arms, and let me disclose– what I have brought back, from a place no one goes! Translation: Maryam Dilmaghani, July 2013.
