Forty-one years ago, I walked into a newspaper office for the first time. I was hired as a telephone operator at the Milwaukee Sentinel and was later moved up to copy kid -- the kind who actually ran for coffee for reporters and editors. My first job in the sports department at the Sentinel was taking bowling scores over the phone. I can safely say Ive done pretty much everything else since then! Eighteen years ago, I came to The Plain Dealer after Roy Hewitt hired me for the second time. (The first time we were both at the St. Paul Pioneer Press.) You all made Cleveland home. I cant thank you enough for all the kind words and thoughts as I leave to pursue a new career in health care in the Cleveland area. Your support and friendship has been priceless. I think so often of what my PD friend and colleague Karen Long said when she left the newspaper business: I will miss it every day for the rest of my life. I salute all of you who remain, striving to do the kind of journalism we were trained to do. Its so hard these days, but its so important. Keep up the good fight. I will be reading.
