Forty-three years ago in a military chapel in North Dakota, a Chaplain asked if we had come freely and without reservation to give ourselves to each other in marriage. Before I was able to respond, he turned to me and said, “Are you sure you want to go through with this?” I assured him that I was sure. Michael repeated his vow. The Chaplain then asked me, “Do you take Michael for your lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part? As I prepared to respond, the Chaplain said, “You know it’s not too late to change your mind.” I responded with a simple, but confident “Yes.” Our marriage has been an adventure that includes love, respect, thoughtfulness, sadness, disappointment, joy, frustration, patience, success, wonderful sons and beautiful daughters-in-law, precious grandchildren and a loving and humorous extended family. Thank you, for your patience and support over the years, Michael. I love you.
