Forty years ago, aged 18, I stepped off a plane at Athens airport on a flight to Israel that had been aborted because of the outbreak of the Yom Kippur war. For the first time in my life I was completely alone, uncontactable, and free from any responsibility. The nose I followed took me to the caves of Matala in Crete, to lonely campfires on deserted beaches, to run-ins with the all powerful Greek Junta, to remote mountain villages still living in the Middle Ages..........I got on a roll back then and have never seen any reason to get off it!
