Forty years ago today, my father, James Gillespie, died suddenly, - TopicsExpress

Forty years ago today, my father, James Gillespie, died suddenly, at the age of 51. He made me laugh, encouraged me to think, and always believed in me. He was the man who first showed me the brilliant rings of Saturn through a telescope he had built by hand. And then he gave me a stack of science books to read and discuss with him. He was brilliant. He was the best dad a girl could hope for...and he is forever missed. There is nothing in all the earth that you and I can do for the Dead. They are past our help and past our praise. We can add to them no glory, we can give to them no immortality. The do not need us, but forever and forever more we need them. James A. Garfield, August 1880. Just over a year later, after just a few months in office, President Garfield himself would die at age 50.
