Forward Day by Day Meditation MONDAY, September 16 1 Corinthians 1:1-19. Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. According to 2011 data from the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, there are approximately 41,000 Christian denominations and organizations in the world (counting cultural distinctions/variations). While I think a variety of denominations and expressions of Christian faith speak to the wonderful diversity within our tradition, I also know that there is frequently antipathy present between denominations. In fact, denominations owe their existence to disagreements about theology, practice, and dogma more than to regional and cultural factors. I wonder how we can respond to Paul’s appeal today. Ecumenical movements strive to increase dialogue and relationship between and among denominations. Perhaps a unity of mind and purpose can begin with each one of us beginning to do the difficult work of living in community (comm-unity) with our fellow humans, even those with whom we have disagreements and quarrels.
