Foster Diary Volume 2! Episode ROGER!! (Now Duncan) Here is his story! I didnt know anything about him before I was asked to foster him except he was heart worm positive (my first foster experience with that). I can make speculations and I can guess......But the only one who knows is him. What I do know is that I have never met a dog in my life who could bore thru to your soul with just his eyes the way he could (yes not even my own precious Kiara May). He has what I refer to as old soul eyes. He is like brown velvet and he is the most people friendly dog I think I have ever met. He just wants to become one with you and by that I mean he will press all 60+ lbs of his bassador body into you and insist that you pet him. I met Roger in an Aldis parking lot at about 9pm. The transport guy opened up his SUV hatchback and there he sat. The guy told me how sweet he was (arent they all) and I just nodded my head and said Come on buddy, were going home You could see his eyes light up at the mention of home, He was excited and was eager to go. He got out of the SUV and he instantly pressed all of himself into my leg, almost toppling me over in the process. He just wanted loved. I opened the backdoor to my car and in he went. He had this look about him and my husband suggested I ride in back with him. I didnt even get fully into the backseat and Roger was trying to press his whole body into me, he was nuzzling my neck and trying to climb in my lap. We rode the 3.5 miles home together as one in the backseat of that Mercury. We continued to be one for the next few days and the appox 2 weeks that followed. I had a brand new baby at home along with my older two kids and Roger seemed to understand quickly what I needed from him and I understood instantly what he needed from me. We came to an understanding. He fit right into our family dynamics. The heart worms made him labor for breath and made him severely tired. He was gentle with the kids and he instantly took a liking to my oldest daughter the most. He followed me around the house with this look of concern for where I was. He was never far from me or the kids. But as the days went on he became more sure that we were not going to just abandon him (my gut tells me this is his experience with humans) and he started to relax a little bit. I was happy to be falling into this routine with him as I was fully expecting to have him for the near future (4-6 months) while he underwent treatment for his heart worms. BUT something exciting happened with Roger......Like with all my fosters I post them on my Facebook page. I try and learn their personalty and capture what I can about them in the pictures. Someone on the other side of the computer fell in love with him within a day of me posting him. I only had him for about two weeks before he went on a weekend trial adoption, he has still yet to return to Camp Bartlett. I am fortunate that I can watch the rest of his story unfold he is still writing the chapters and I am eager to read them. *SideNote* I can only guess and speculate but in my heart of hearts Roger was a pet. He is a devoted dog. He came into my house much to familiar with humans and the way a household works. He was most likely given up/abandoned/discarded....whatever word you want to put to it by his humans because of his heart worms, heart worms that they could have prevented and that they were responsible to protect him against. Heart worm prevention is a few dollars a month, the cost of treating heart worm is not only thousands of dollars or possibly the life of your pet but its unnecessary torture to your dog to have to live with them but also to have to be treated for them. Roger is a lucky one. He was saved from a shelter from Basset & Beagle Rescue of the Heartland all the while knowing he had them, knowing the cost it would be to treat him, knowing that even with all our efforts he still may not make it out the other side. But BBRH said yes to Roger and his life. I said yes to fostering him and Kara Jermain and her husband are more than likely saying yes to him forever. If you take anything away from this foster diary I hope its these things.... 1 Heart worm prevention is your friend USE it! 2 Fostering saves lives! DO IT! :) Fostering isnt for everyone but everyone can do something. If you cant foster but would like to do something to help a dog in need you can -Transport -Go to a shelter and volunteer -Donate -Educate -Share and Network thru Facebook. Everyone can do something! One dog might not change the world, but for that one dog YOU can change the world. This public service announcement brought to you proudly by Camp Bartlett. Fostering dogs since 2013 :)
