Found a brick in an abandoned ruin today with the label "Nanyang". - TopicsExpress

Found a brick in an abandoned ruin today with the label "Nanyang". Bricks do not normally interest me, but this one felt special. So I did some research on it, and uncovered an interesting piece of history related to place name future generations will find quite disconnected from what it refers to. Nanyang refers to the Nanyang Brickworks, a now demolished brick making factory at Jalan Lam Sam. The factory appears to have been in operation up to the late 1990s, but I could only pin down one year related to it, that is 1967, when its workers went on strike. This factory, along with its neighbor, the Jurong Brickworks were the two factories that lend their name to Brickland Road, the road that connects Choa Chu Kang and Buki Batok. Both factories are gone now with almost nary a trace, with the exception of the name that lingers in the road nearby
