Foundation tourney set for Beaverlodge By Logan Clow, Grande Prairie Daily Herald-Tribune Monday, August 19, 2013 1:43:28 MDT PM Bookmark and Share Change text size for the story Print Report an error Whether you’re an experienced golfer, or still learning the basics, the West County Community Foundation’s golf tournament on Friday (Aug. 23) at the Riverbend Golf Course in Beaverlodge promises to be an enjoyable experience for all ages regardless of skill level. The golf tournament is the first fundraiser of its kind for the foundation and organizers say there are still several spots open. “What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to build a general fund for the West County area, so that’s obviously our goal. We want people to come out and have some fun and learn a little bit more about what we do,” said Roger Arcand, chairman of the foundation. “It’s an area represented group and we’re trying to build some endowment funds to have a bit of a closer connection to the community so we know what the community needs are and hopefully we could help direct where the needs are.” The cost to participate is $100 per person or $400 per team. Those who register individually will be paired up with others. Included in the entry fees are golf, golf cart rental, steak dinner and various prizes. Those who don’t want to play golf can attend the steak dinner for $30. On Friday, golfers are asked to sign-in between 8-9 a.m. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with a best ball format. “We’re trying to kick-start it a bit. We’re slowly getting awareness for people to understand what is a community foundation. So it is the very first one (golf tournament), so it’s our building block I guess you could say. We’re trying to get more golfers and we have a pretty good array of prizes and silent auction items,” Arcand said. “You don’t have to be an expert to golf. You just want to come out and have some fun.” The golf course is located two kilometres off Highway 43, west of Beaverlodge. “I’m looking optimistic. We’re getting the golfers, we’re all organized. My expectations are we will fill all of the holes with 36 golfers – that’s my minimum expectations. I’m hoping we can raise $4,000- $5,000,” Arcand added. Arcand says there are two important factors that will determine if it becomes an annual fundraiser. “First thing is getting the participation. That’s important. I think that when people have fun they’ll want to come again. I think that’s the important part, if you get the participation and the fun everything else just falls into place.” For more information about the foundation visit: buildingtomorrowtoday.
