Foundations and Trusts Hundreds of foundations partner with Save the Children to fulfill their individual missions and help us achieve positive outcomes for children. Our six global priorities are that children are protected; children learn and develop; children are healthy and well-nourished; children thrive in food-secure and economically viable households; children affected by HIV/AIDS are supported; and emergency response is effectively managed. Save the Children welcomes unrestricted support, endowment gifts, and funding for specific projects. We honor the unique preferences and philanthropic goals of each of our foundation partners. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a key partner of Save the Children, supports a number of important initiatives and programs. Save the Childrens Saving Newborn Lives program, a highly-respected initiative that partners with global, regional and national stakeholders, works to improve policies, technologies and approaches to improve essential newborn care and reduce newborn mortality. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also supports Save the Childrens participation in efforts to improve the management of neonatal infections and infant and young child nutrition. In addition the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has supported Save the Childrens response and recovery assistance to more than 25 crisis and emergencies throughout the world. Back to top By supporting Save the Childrens U.S. programs, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation has made a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of children in poor, rural areas of South Carolina. The Hearst Foundation funds our signature programs in four schools and communities. The Early Steps to School Success program provides early childhood development services to help prepare children for future school success through home visitation and parent child groups. Literacy programming is implemented through in-school, after-school and summer reading support, aimed at increasing the reading achievement of children in elementary school. Thanks to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the number of children reading at or above grade level has increased by nearly 150 percent. Back to top Conrad N. Hilton, the founder of Hilton Hotels, established the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in 1944 to improve the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people throughout the world. The Foundation has teamed up with Save the Children and CARE to improve the developmental outcomes for young vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS. Through this partnership, we have defined the key interventions that these children need for optimal development and created tools for providing services to these children and their caregivers. We have collaborated with a coalition of stakeholders in order to inform global practice. The Conrad N. Hilton Foundations generosity is addressing a critical unmet need--to help overcome the challenges faced by young children affected by HIV/AIDS in the early years of life. Back to top Dubai Cares works to improve access to quality primary education in developing countries and is currently supporting Save the Children in numerous large-scale, long-term projects worldwide. When childrens education is interrupted by illness or conditions that reduce the ability to learn, the cycle of poverty is perpetuated. In Indonesia, Dubai Cares is helping to improve the well-being of children by integrating water and sanitation facilities and hygiene promotion in 225 primary schools. Dubai Cares is also implementing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programs in schools in Mali — providing clean water, child-friendly latrines, de-worming, micronutrient supplementation and hand washing training to thousands of children. In Sudan, Dubai Cares is providing support to help increase the capacity and quality of primary schools, allowing for greater access to conducive, inclusive, safe and healthy schools. With teacher training, the foundations support allows us to provide the knowledge and skills for protecting children in schools, as well as build the capacities of communities and households to support basic education. Dubai Cares has also partnered with Save the Children to improve access to and the quality of primary education for vulnerable children in Bangladesh. By allowing Save the Children to expand and improve our non-formal primary education model, Dubai Cares has enabled us to reach children who live in conditions of extreme poverty in remote rural and coastal areas, who have limited or no access to formal schooling. In Yemen, Dubai Cares programs are working with the Ministry of Education to increase school enrollment and the quality of education among poor and vulnerable groups. This inclusive education model is being implemented by Save the Children in poor rural and urban areas and focuses especially on girls and children with disabilities. The widespread support of Dubai Cares is helping to improve the lives of thousands of children across the world. Back to top Newmans Own Foundation has provided support for the expansion of the Kangaroo Mother Care program in Nigeria, enabling Save the Children to provide Kangaroo Mother Care with training and basic newborn care equipment in Lagos and Abuja. One of the priorities of Newmans Own Foundation is the support of organizations that enhance the quality of life for children with life-limiting conditions. Funding for the Kangaroo Mother Care program helps to reduce newborn and maternal deaths, giving children in Nigeria a better chance for a healthy life. Back to top The Church Communities Foundation has joined with Save the Children to support a wide variety of projects and initiatives for many years. In addition to providing unrestricted funding for the agencys general mission, the foundation has offered crucial support for disaster response and emergency recovery programs in the U.S., Sudan, Myanmar, American Samoa, Haiti, and Japan. In the U.S., the Foundation has supported literacy and early childhood development programs, and has donated furniture to Save the Childrens emergency response efforts following Hurricane Katrina and assistance in rebuilding local daycare centers after the southern California Wildfires. Internationally, the foundation has contributed to emergency relief in Haiti, and a disaster risk reduction program in Vietnam. Most recently, the Church Communities Foundation has provided generous support in response to the devastating tsunami and earthquake in Japan, as well as supplied volunteers to help Save the Children carry out its emergency response efforts following the tornadoes in the Southern US. Back to top Female teachers are critical to ensuring a greater participation and enrollment of girls in schools, especially beyond grades 3 and 4 and in rural areas. There is an urgent need for female teachers in Afghanistan, as only 28% of school teachers are women. The Open Society Foundations have teamed up with Save the Children to implement the Girls Urgent Early Steps to Teaching Success program in Afghanistan. The project targets 240 high school girls in grades 10 to 12 in Bamyan, Afghanistan enabling them to participate in pre-service trainings on teaching methodology, based on the Ministry of Educations National Program for in-service teacher training. The project is designed and conducted to prepare older girls to become qualified school teachers. Thanks to the Open Society Foundations support, we can work towards ensuring the empowerment of girls and young women, and promoting their development and advancement. Back to top The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has been a long time supporter of Save the Childrens Aid Effectiveness Program. Thanks to the foundations generous funding, Save the Children has been able to focus on advocacy efforts within the U.S. Government, for aid reform and effectiveness. By appealing to Congress, the Executive Branch, and other NGOs, we have been able to deliver impactful messages on behalf of country ownership and country-led development as new priorities for governmental aid. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has made a real investment in the future of our countrys aid programs through their support of Save the Children. Back to top The GHR Foundation has supported Save the Childrens Safe Communities Project in Nepal. Coming out of a decade-long armed conflict, the children of Nepal were largely abused and neglected. This project targets these children in jeopardy, focusing on their care and protection. The Safe Communities project emphasizes that families and communities are the first line of protection for children, and that community-based care is a far more effective model than institutionalization. The project has been implemented for the care of over 6,000 children in the Achham and Kailali districts of Nepal, and the ultimate aim is to use it as a model for the protection and care of children in jeopardy throughout the country. Thank you to the GHR Foundation for supporting the children of Nepal. Back to top
