Founded in 2005, United States Artists drew roughly $15 million in seed money from the Ford Foundation, $3 million from the Rockefeller Foundation and $1 million each from the Prudential and Rasmuson Foundations. Each year since, the group has given $50,000 each to a total of 50 artists from eight fields: architecture and design; crafts; dance; literature; film, radio and television; music; theater; and visual arts. To qualify for a fellowship, artists are nominated by a group of professionals selected by the nonprofit organization; each chosen artist is then invited to submit an application and work samples; finalists are picked by a panel of professional artists and experts and announced at a ceremony every November (the list of finalists for this year was released Monday).
