Foundry Senior Technical Advisor, Pretoria, R740 554 - R1 110.83 pa. Our client is looking for a dynamic and competent Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineer within die R&D & Production & Manufacturing environment and with applicable background specialising in the Foundry industry that has the knowledge and background to act as the Senior Technical Advisor in establishing the National Foundry Technology Network. Our client has established the National Foundry Technology Network (NFTN) which is funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti). This network is overseen in collaboration with industry, represented by the South African Institute of Foundrymen (SAIF) and the Aluminium Casters Association (ACA), and other stakeholders. The NFTN is a national initiative that facilitates the development of a globally competitive South African foundry industry through appropriate skills training, technology transfer and diffusion of state-of-the-art technologies. This requires the participation of a multitude of service providers such as universities, training institutions, science councils, consultants, and the foundry industry itself, whose activities are guided and coordinated through the NFTN. This will be a three-year contract to support the project leader in management of the foundry level component of the NFTN, with a possibility of extension. Based in Pretoria, the Senior Technical Advisor will assist the NFTN project leader to organise, implement and control all related projects associated to the dti competitiveness improvement programme on foundry level and its link to the cluster/supply chain level activities. This includes the efficient and effective management of available resources to reach the project goals on time and budget and specific technical support to individual foundries. Requirements • A degree or diploma in mechanical or metallurgical engineering. • Relevant certificate/training in a continuous improvement methodology. • Evidence of advanced project management courses and experience. • A minimum of 20 years in total experience in the manufacturing industry of which a minimum of eight should be in the foundry industry. • Experience in managing engineering-related projects will be an added advantage. • Experience in continuous improvement methodology will be an added advantage. • Evidence of experience in transferring skills would be an added advantage. • Adequate experience and knowledge in PM and other related fields of expertise. • Self-discipline. • Good interpersonal relationship and stakeholder liaison skills. • Well-spoken and diplomatic. • Understanding of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). • Leadership and people management skills. • Ability to interact and network at a high level and have good technical acumen. • Liaise with a diverse portfolio of people locally and internationally. • Capacity building and skills transfer. Responsibilities • Manage the Competitiveness Improvement Initiatives (CII) as set out in the NFTN business plan for 2013/14, according to project management (PM) principles including: o project charter o a calendar of activities o a time schedule o a responsibility matrix o a project budget plan o major milestones with target dates o A risk management strategy. • General PM and coordination of activities. • Performance monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of activities, with particular focus on the CII. • Provide quarterly and annual reports of the foundry level activities as input into the NFTN quarterly and annual reports to the dti. • Plan, manage, organise, direct and ensure knowledge development/management of the NFTN foundry level activities and implementation of its projects. • Support the NFTN project leader to effectively deliver against short-, medium- and long-term strategic objectives and targets set for the CII as defined by the dti. • Manage the NFTN CII projects to be in line with the company’s policies, standards and procedures towards adherence to corporate governance. • Capacitate and transfer skills to the junior technical advisor to be appointed in the near future as part of the NFTN transformation process. • Assist with appointing of service providers for technical assistance to foundries, comprising the following main elements: o Preparation of Terms of Reference (ToR); o Request for Proposal (RFP) – circulate to preferred supplier list and publish, as appropriate; o Facilitate the proposals from service providers to be reviewed by a panel comprising the NFTN project leader, one representative from the organisation and DST, respectively. The incumbent will be involved in the review as required; o Contract service providers (these could be from the private sector, parastatals, and science councils such as the organisation and Mintek); and o Monitor and evaluate the execution of the project. Offer Salaries will be calculated according to qualifications and applicable experience. Medical Aid and Pension Fund.
