Four RS-25 engines, like the one pictured undergoing a hot-fire test, will power the core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) — NASA’s new heavy-lift launch vehicle. (Credit: NASA) In 2013 Aerojet Rocketdyne teamed with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. and Boeing to successfully integrate four RS-25 core stage engines that will power the SLS core stage to an initial low-Earth orbit. By repurposing the RS-25 engines, previously flown as the Space Shuttle Main Engines, the SLS program is able to use a proven human-rated engine without significant development and production costs.
