Four of us decided to take advantage of the nice weather yesterday and went out in the woods to test bugle tubes. First off let me say if youre out there with your small corrugated pipe and believe one tube is as good as the next, IMHO you are sadly mistaken and are missing out on taking your calling to the next level. We tested several tubes including, the Phelps unlocatabull tube, Bugling Bulls new bully bull Extreme tube, and the elk nut chuckler. We had several other tubes as well but these were the ones we really wanted to test with. The caller would walk to the same spot over a rise in the timber about a hundred yards away to call, while the other 3 stood separated from each other and graded each call on paper making notes about what they liked or disliked. Each caller used the same type reed, and did the same call set. Each tube was graded on a scale of 1-5 stars with individuals notes per call set. What were looking for ultimately is the loudest tube that produces the most realistic overall sounds. Believe me you want loud. The loudest human caller is maybe 25% as loud as your average elk. But you cant sacrifice good natural tone. The overall winner- Bully Bull Extreme. It got high marks across the board for the new wider mouth opening, and ranked best for its mix of volume and desirable tone. Its the only tube we tested that didnt start life as a wiffle ball bat. The thicker plastic walls and its design from inception to be a call makes its sound extremely realistic. The Chuckler had the highest marks for its tone, but was by far the quietest tube. The Phelps tube was the loudest for sure, but it had a bit of a hollow or plastic-ish sound to it when compared to the others. We were able to improve the tone by placing several large rubber dampers around the tube, but this lowered its over all volume. Matt Stanton Rich Brown David Telfer
