Four women from different worlds, talking together about our children and grandchildren as they sewed their beautiful dolls to support their families. We were lucky enough to be invited into their workroom in their community and we laughed as women do about ordinary family matters, hopes, fears and dreams that unite the world far more than official meetings and seminars and declarations. I gave my new friend the beads I was wearing that she loved and we hugged and cried a little and promised to meet when we return next year. We both have our battles ahead to fight, my new friend and I, but just for an hour or so the world became a smaller place, four women friends across the divide, joined in love and ordinariness. And we took home our dolls and left a little bit of ourselves, sad the time should end but enriched by acceptance and kindliness and kinship beyond frontiers.
