Frances Brennan Rice to Receive French Legion of Honor Rank of Knight On December 27, at 3:00 p.m. at the Village Center, Warm Hearth Village, 2387 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg, VA, in the presence of Civil and Military dignitaries from The United States of America and Republic of France, Colonel Eric Mongnot, French liaison officer at the Pentagon, will bestow the French Legion of Honor in the rank of Knight upon 2nd Lt. Frances C. (Rusty) Brennan Rice. Rusty was an Army nurse with the 7th Army in Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge from December 1944 to January 1945. She is ONLY the second nurse in Virginia (both from the Roanoke Valley) to receive the highest award from the Republic of France. Cadets of Virginia Tech will provide the color guards and National anthems will be played by Rose Ann Burgess, Director of music/organist at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Salem. Rusty resides at Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg and her family and friends will celebrate this distinguished honor with a reception following the ceremony.
