Francis P. Slate, 92, of Camden, passed away on July 16, 2014, at Rome Hospital. He was born August 31, 1921, a son of Reuben and Loretta Tassey Slate in Alexandria Bay, NY. On September 2, 1940 in Alexandria Bay, Francis was joined in marriage to his wife of over seventy years, the former Catherine Thibault. He served with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII. Fran retired in 1978 as district supervisor for ACME Markets after 41 years of service. He also was co-owner of the Ship & Shore Market, Sylvan Beach for many years. For many years he and Catherine enjoyed travels to Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, China, Ireland, Bahamas and all 48 continental states in their RV. She passed away Feb 19, 2011. Fran joined the Arthur S. Moran American Legion as a charter Member in 1945. He also was a member of the 40 et 8 Voiture 92, the Victor Giles VFW Post, D.A.V., the Knights of Columbus and the Camden Vol. Fire Dept from 1946-1954. Fran loved fishing, hunting and his cottages in Mazinaw Lake, Ontario Canada and Redfield, NY. Surviving are four children; Kevin & Madeline Slate, Cleveland, Karen & Ted Kenealy, Camden, Judith & James Beischel, Fountain Hills, AZ, Jean & Jack Lemmon, Marion, NY, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, a brother, Harold Slate, N. Syracuse, NY and several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by a son Robert, brother, Robert and sister, Agnes Thibault A Funeral Mass will be held 9:30 am Saturday from St. John’s Church, Camden, NY. Interment St. John’s Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at LaRobardiere Funeral Home, 109 Main Street, Camden, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to a Veteran’s Charity of choice.
