Francis Toohey Jr. A funeral will be held Monday, July 1, 2013 for 86-year-old Francis Toohey Jr. of Perryville who died Thursday, June 26, 2013 at his son’s residence in Jefferson City after a short illness. He was born August 24, 1926, son of Francis J. and Ruby (Sword) Toohey who both preceded him in death. He married Dolores Williamson on September 11, 1952. She preceded him in death on January 31, 2004. He is survived by a son: Gary (Ann) Toohey of Jefferson City; two nephews: Richard (Vonda) Moonier of Orlando, Florida and Howard (Sondra) Redpath of Mount Vernon, Illinois; a niece: Debra Pace of Orlando, Florida; two grandchildren: Douglas (Dawn) Mullins of Imperial and Jennifer (Jason) Gerling of Jefferson City; and five great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a sister: Betty Moonier, and two infant sons. Raised in Chester, Illinois, he served with the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Upon his return from military service, he attended Saint Louis University, from which he received his Juris Doctorate in 1951. He was admitted to The Missouri Bar in September 1951 and began practicing law in Perryville. He served as Perry County Prosecuting Attorney for a number of years before exclusively concentrating on his private practice on the courthouse square in Perryville. In addition, he operated a smaller office in Ste. Genevieve for a number of years. He was a founding member of the Perryville Development Corporation and served as its original director. He was also a long-serving member of the Perryville Area Chamber of Commerce, and was board member for several years. He served as attorney for a number of political subdivisions and organizations, including: the Bois Brule Levee District, the cities of Perryville, St. Mary, Altenburg, and Frohna; the New Bourbon Regional Port Authority; the St. Mary Chamber of Commerce; Perry County Public Water Supply District No. 1; and the Perry County Multi-Purpose Park Center Commission. In addition, for many years he was a member of the board of directors and legal counsel for The Bank of Missouri. He retired from the practice of law and sold his law firm in 2012 after 62 years of service to the legal profession, the community, and the people of Perry County. A member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, he was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4282, American Legion Post 133, Lion’s Club, and many other civic and fraternal organizations. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday, June 30 and 6:30-10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Young & Sons Funeral Home in Perryville. A funeral for 86-year-old Francis Toohey, Jr. of Perryville will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Young and Sons Funeral Home in Perryville. The Rev. Milton Ryan CM will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery with military graveside provided by VFW Post 4282 and the Missouri Delta Team. Memorials are preferred to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church or Schools.
