Frans de Waal - Public Page JEFFS Freedom Jeff Guidry volunteers at the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center in Everett Washington. In 1998 a baby eagle was brought emaciated, covered in lice and with two broken wings. After 6 weeks Freedom still could not stand, when the decision to euthanize if she couldnt stand up that week had to be made she finally stood up.They knew Freedom could never fly so Jeff started to glove tra in her for educational programs and visited schools and appeared on TV. In spring 2000 Jeff was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma stage 3. He had 8 months of chemo but when he felt good enough hed go and take Freedom out for walks, she also appeared in his dreams to help him fight cancer. In November 2000 for his last check up the cancer was gone and the first thing he did was to take out the big girl for a walk. I hadnt said a word to Freedom but somehow she knew. She looked at me and wrapped both her wings around me (I was engulfed in eagle wings) and she touched my nose with her beak and stared into my eyes, and we just stood there like that for I dont know how long. We have been soul mates ever since she came in. This is a very special bird. Sarvey wildlife care center: sarveywildlife.org/
