Fred Geisler, I started reading Barbarians. I think he is overstating and biasing his case. For example, he makes a big deal of the Roman ruthlessness and viciousness. But were they were no more vicious than the Greeks or other surrounding people. Probably no more vicious than the Celts either. Probably, in that kind of international environment, that was necessary to survive. One thing that is interesting about the Romans is that they justified their wars. I dont think Ive seen that in any other ancient culture, except maybe Cyrus (who said at each place he was sent by that places Gods). Im probably being prejudiced for the Romans. I grew up on old(1) Zionist history books, and they were very anti-Roman. (1) As in 1940s-1950s, read by my parents when they were young
