Free Boating Safety @ La Marina off Dyckman Street on Saturday! Coast Guard Auxiliary to hold boating safety event at new marina in Upper Manhattan NEW YORK -- Did you know a person not wearing a life jacket has a 1 in 11 chance of drowning in a boating accident? According the U.S. Coast Guard statistics, those odds drop to only 1 in 66 if he or she wears a personal flotation device. And yet, many boaters dont wear a life jacket or simply dont know how to wear one correctly. For some tips on boating safety -- including how to properly put on a life jacket -- a local flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the all-volunteer uniformed civilian component of the Coast Guard, will host a safe boating event with free vessel safety checks on Saturday, August 9, 2014, 12-4 p.m., at La Marina along the Hudson River at the end of Dyckman Street. Qualified vessel examiners from Flotilla 5-11, also known as the Upper Manhattan Flotilla, will inspect boats to ensure that boaters have all required -- and working -- safety equipment. Examiners will also make sure boaters have the proper paperwork. The vessel safety check is done free of charge and carries no legal obligations or penalties. If the examiner finds a problem or violation, he or she will give the boater options and information for correcting it. Members of Flotilla 5-11 will also be handing out very important boating safety information and answering questions about New Yorks waterways, maritime domain awareness, survival tips, communications, environmental concerns, and much more. If boaters cannot make this event, they can always go to vesselsafetycheck.org and click on I Want a VSC to find a vessel examiner nearby. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the United States Coast Guard. Created by an Act of Congress in 1939, the Auxiliary directly supports the Coast Guard in all missions, except military and direct law enforcement actions. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is an integral part of the United States Coast Guard. For more information visit cgaux.org.
