District 23 (Gibraltar, Trenton, Woodhaven and the townships of Brownstown, Grosse Isle and Huron) Incumbent Republican Rep. Pat Somerville, 34, is a knowledgeable lawmaker whose tireless campaigning helped flip this Democratic-leaning district to the GOP in 2012. He voted against the Republican majoritys pension tax and right-to-work bills in deference to the districts blue-collar voters. But he supports a partisan scheme to disenfranchise Democratic voters in presidential elections and opposes efforts to compel greater transparency in government and campaign finance. David Haener, a 44-year-old software consultant from New Boston and a longtime Democratic activist, bested two rivals for his partys nomination. Haener is an energetic newcomer who understands how the states neglect of its responsibility to municipalities led many communities to stints with emergency managers, although he opposes the states emergency manager law. In a close contest, DAVID HAENERS full-throated support for the Sunshine Promise makes him the Free Press choice.
