“Free” Trade Agreements (FTAs) are ‘Right to Farm’ on Steroids Monsanto doesn’t just control major facets of the US government! The following post is a snapshot into Monsanto’s involvement in “free” trade. FTAs are like ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council that wrote ‘Right to Farm’) in that they exist to facilitate corporate interests. We the people are not represented in these negotiations and even our elected officials have had extremely minimal to no involvement. FTAs will cut across every sector of society: food, medicine, internet, labor, environment, public services, financial institutions and more. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a “free” trade agreement that has been negotiated in secret over the last five years among over 600 corporate “advisors” and trade representatives from twelve Pacific-rim countries: US, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. A European counter part, the Transatlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP aka TAFTA) has been secretly negotiated over the last year with the US and the European Union (EU). Simultaneously there are many bilateral and multi-lateral FTAs currently being negotiated. Only 25 of the 29 chapters of the TPP actually deal with trade and tariffs. The rest is a corporate grab bag. What little we know about the TPP is due to leaks from brave individuals and WikiLeaks.
