Freedom of expression is a human right. The attack on the Charlie Hebdo newspaper is an assault on democracy and freedom of expression. Violence against journalists is abhorrent and must not be tolerated in any form. This latest attack follows the imprisonment of Al Jazeera journalists Peter Greste (Australian), Mohamed Fahmy (Egyptian-Canadian) and Baher Mohamed (Egyptian) who were sentenced to a minimum of seven years imprisonment in Egypt for aiding the Muslim Brotherhood. Their June trial was a farce which has dangerously undermined any progress towards democracy in Egypt. The trio’s latest court appearance has given hope that they may be deported, however a date for retrial has yet to be set and is likely to be a needlessly protracted process. We need to hear our governments voice AND actions against the insidious attacks on freedom of expression.
