Freeholder-elect Vainieri calls for guard rails on Kennedy Boulevard in wake of tragic hit and run NORTH BERGEN, NJ – Freeholder-elect Anthony Vainieri is calling on Hudson County to install guard rails on Kennedy Boulevard near the Columbia Park shopping center to prevent tragic accidents like the hit and run that sent two local residents to the hospital with serious injuries over the weekend. Michael and Adrian Viruet were both struck by a red Nissan Rogue that jumped the curb and drove into the pedestrian area Saturday night while walking home from seeing a movie. Police are still searching for the vehicle, which fled the scene with heavy front end damage. Kennedy Boulevard at 31st and 32nd streets has a dangerous mix of heavy vehicle traffic with the approach to the Lincoln Tunnel and many pedestrians walking to and from nearby shopping areas, said Vainieri. What happened to these young men was an absolute tragedy and the County needs to act to prevent something like this from happening again. Guard rails along with sidewalk in this area could have protected Michael and Adrian from this ordeal and I pledge to do whatever I can to make sure this situation is fixed. Kennedy Boulevard is a County road, which means Hudson County has jurisdiction rather than the local municipalities. Vainieri, who will be sworn in as Freeholder representing North Bergen and parts of Jersey City and Secaucus in January, will be making a formal request to the County Executives Office as well as the Director of the County Department of Roads to immediately install guard rails in this area. The Viruet brothers remain in critical condition and the family has established a fundraising page to help pay for medical costs. Freeholder-elect Vainieri is making a personal donation and will also encourage others to donate to the page, which is available at this link: gofundme/michaelandadrian Although I wont take office until January, I feel that I cannot sit back and do nothing after seeing such a horrific accident right here in our community and thats why I am taking this action, said Vainieri. I urge County officials to act on this request immediately and help prevent another tragedy like this, and I also urge the driver of the vehicle to turn him or herself in to the authorities so that this family can get the closure it needs and justice can be served.
