Freemasonry in America was originally intended to protect the community from infiltration from political groups and people who would take our rights away,it was pretty openly practiced ,the town folk at their usual places of gathering be it a pub or whatever knew each other this way ,and other travelers where easily accepted as fellow American/revolutionaries this way.The secrecy(though full of bizarre rituals? was based on developing trust in time when written communications of dissent could have you hanged. The fashion of these groups eventually mostly went out,and the idea of elitist groups like the Illuminati infiltrating them is possible, but useless, because we have no real reason to join the Boys Scouts or whatever, some people just like tradition
