Freight News: August 2013 The Port of Shanghai was once again the busiest container port in the world in 2012, handling 32.5 million 20-foot-equivalent container units (TEUs), up 2.5% from the 2011 total of 31.7m TEUs. Singapore, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Busan rounded out the top 5, as Asian ports continued to dominate The Journal of Commerce annual ranking of the Top 50 World Container Ports. The top Middle Eastern port was Jebel Ali, which handled 13.3m TEUs in 2012. The top European port was Rotterdam, with 11.9m TEUs; modest growth lifted Los Angeles past Long Beach to rank as the top US port. Santos, coming in at No. 42 on the list, was the top South American port; Melbourne took the top spot in Australasia, and the SA port of Durban was the busiest in Africa
